Why Are There No Black Girls in Hip Hop Videos Anymore?: Complexion Obsession Hip Hop Documentary PT.1

There are so many beautiful black urban models on Instagram but when is the last time you’ve seen a brown beauty like Miracle Watts or Bria Myles in a Hip Hop video lately? They are too busy hosting parties and taking photos I guess because they are tired of dealing with the “light skin is the right skin” culture in Hip Hop.

Joy Daily produced this film four years ago but I am just seeing this now and I thought it would go perfect with my “Skin Bleaching in Hip Hop” series. This issue made me realize one specific reason why some women may fall victim to skin bleaching. This documentary focuses on the views and opinions of people on the Hip Hop culture spectrum like rappers, video models, directors and professors. Hip Hop Celebrities such as Rick Ross, Pusha-T, Cassidy, Melissa Ford and much more share their views on this topic. Some of the things said in this film are hilarious and just pitiful to say the least.

All I can say is, Black people we still have a long way to go to truly love ourselves, culture and our people!
